Best practice for cleaning your specs

It can be tempting to reach for anything close at hand to give your spectacles a quick clean. But a lot of those easy to reach items may damage your lenses. Here are some top tips to help keep your specs both sparkling clean and in good condition!

It’s best to use a dedicated lens cleaning solution and a microfibre cloth to clean your lenses. This will ensure they are both clean and streak free.

Feel free to rinse your glasses with lukewarm water (not hot) every now and again but make sure you use a lint-free microfibre cloth to dry them.

We recommend you avoid using washing up liquid to clean your lenses as it can break down the lens coatings. It’s also best not to use paper towels or clothing to clean your lenses as the fibres are too coarse and can cause scratches.

Avoid breathing on your glasses to clean them. Apart from not being particularly hygienic, it can leave smudges on your lenses.

Don’t use window or glass cleaner sprays to clean your glasses as they can damage your lenses. In addition, we advise against using screen wipes designed to clean computers or mobile phones as they usually contain alcohol which is too harsh and may also damage your lenses.

If you are a current patient at our practice, do feel free to pop into the store to collect a new microfibre cloth or an Auerbach & Steele lens cleaning spray if needed. We look forward to seeing you!
