Back to School!

As we head into a new year and a new school term, it’s the perfect time to book an annual eye examination for your little one(s).

Myopia or short-sightedness, is an increasingly common eye problem in children. There are now several options designed to manage the progression of myopia by slowing down the eye growth (axial length), particularly in children and young people.

Some common signs of myopia in children to look out for include:

  • Frequent squinting to try and see distant objects more clearly, as this can temporarily improve focus.
  • They may sit very close to the TV, computer or hold mobile devices close to their face.
  • Teachers might notice that the child struggles to read the whiteboard or chalkboard from the back of the classroom.
  • Holding books, toys or other objects unusually close to their face when reading or inspecting them.
  • Excessive eye rubbing or blinking can indicate eye strain due to poor vision.
  • Complaining of headaches, especially after reading, doing homework or other tasks that involve visual focus over long periods.
  • Avoiding outdoor play or sports that involve seeing things at a distance, like football or cricket, because they have trouble seeing clearly.
  • Some children tilt their heads or cover one eye to improve focus, which can be a sign of vision problems.
  • Myopia can affect a child’s spatial awareness, making them seem more clumsy or prone to bumping into things.
  • In some cases, children with myopia may have trouble seeing clearly in low light or at night.

If you have noticed any of these signs, do book an appointment with one of our expert optometrists who will advise on the best course of treatment going forward.
